Chilly, Chilly Willy the Penguin

It's hitting 50 deg F at night... kinda reminds me of the brisk nights in Sequoia Nat'l Park back in June! *sigh* When do we get to go back!?!? Maybe next time I'll post pictures of the mysterious creature known as a bear-ver... half bear, half beaver. I have proof.

Feats of Strength

Here's Laney with her favorite thing to do at the park. (Be forewarned that I kind of yell at the end of the video clip. Sorry!)

downs and ups

So, I had a little scare tonight. Gib runs up to me crying that his body hurt. For some that don't know, he says this a lot and it could mean anything from hunger to dry skin. But this time he had tears and was almost doubled over. He pointed to a place right above his tummy and just kept saying it hurt. I was thinking about what my next move might be -- loading up the kids, which ER to go to. Well, I had picked him up and was trying to comfort him when he let out a large burp. This made me stop and think. I had split an A & W between the three of them for dinner and since Mya didn't get much I had opened a new can, given her a little and set it down on the table. I asked Gib if he had had the remaining root beer. He said yes but that it was so he would grow bigger. This was followed by a few more burps and when I asked if he felt better he said, "No...well, attually yes, I do." My prayers of gratitude were quickly given and everything returned to normal (except my blood pressure, of course.)
And, on a totally different note, I am reporting to all that Gib no longer has his pacifier and, drumroll please, Mya no longer has a purple blanket! Yes, as of a few days ago they are both sleeping through the night without the aid of boppy or blanket. For those of you who thought Mya would leave for college with blanket in tow, I must admit I am shocked too. It wasn't planned, forced or even plotted. "and we know that all things work together for good..." amen
And finally, here are some pics -- three from this cool park we went to and one from lego building time.

Our Forests Are Safe

Meet your U.S. Forest Service's four newest certified Junior Rangers: Mya, Laney, Logan & Gib. Here is the official swearing in (I kid you not!) by one of the Park Rangers at the Sequoia National Park during our camping trip!

All of them completed their field research workbooks, earning the basic Junior Ranger badge along with the first level, the Jayhawk badge. Additionally, Logan showed great determination and amazed the ranger by completing the second level (the Arrowhead badge) for a total of three phases completed in just two days. The astounded ranger said, "I think that's the first time I've seen anyone do THREE at once, Logan!!"

Great job, campers!

Vocab refresher for the visitors

[above are pics from our recent trip to San Diego--enjoy as you read below]

Okay, I just wanted to make sure you guys were up to speed on the latest words around our house.
  1. Hookie - something you hang your towel on
  2. Mitter - the person who catches the ball. The batter uses a bat and the mitter uses a - you guessed it!
  3. Dish'nin - what makes the surburban cool down (i.e. - Mom, can you please turn on the dish'nin?)
  4. Cauliflower - what Laney answered when I said, "It starts with C, and it's where you'll GO when you're twenty."
  5. God... and People who don't know God - what Mya answered the first and second time I asked her what was going on in the history book I was reading them. It was really about the Romans, so I guess the "People who don't know God" answer was mostly correct. Mostly.
  6. Night at the Newseeum - greatest movie ever made according to the kids.
  7. Attila the Hutt - the historically scary leader dude.
  8. Sausage race - best part of a baseball game, also according to the kids - the problem is, if you're not watching a Brewer's home game, there isn't one, so you have to settle for the usual "Take Me out to the Ballgame" part of the Cub's game.
  9. Bubble maker - a whirlpool bathtub
And... a list of what our kids consider the "choice jobs" worth fighting over the rights to do:
  1. Collecting the trashcans and dumping them into the kitchen garbage bag
  2. Any task, and I mean ANY, that involves using a spray bottle
  3. Any job requiring the vacuum; and according to the kids, the entire house floor surface can be cleaned terrifically with that skinny corner nozzle attachment
  4. If running water can be incorporated into a job, it rocks
I'm sure you may have additional inputs to these lists, so feel free to add a comment!

High Mountain Park, or the Other-other White Meat?

We went up the hill into the mountains for the first time today... Wow! We've been missing some beautiful scenery only 15 min away! It was nice to be among the tall pines, and smell that awesome evergreen smell. It was a crowded little town, with tons of little league baseball games in progress, but it was on the small, quaint, ski-town level. We can't wait to show our summer visitors the infinite view from the mountain road pull-off just a little further up the road. Amazing. We'll definitely be going back more often!

We got tacos from a local tiny restaurant there, which interestingly enough had a slight slope to it. Yes, the building itself leaned, as if the earth had settled and was now out of level. It's weird to stand inside somewhere and feel yourself being pulled by gravity to one side... Maybe this disturbance in the universe is enough to throw off people's brains, their thoughts, their accuracy on the job? You be the judge. Anyway, I ordered 1 beef and 4 chicken items to go (tacos, taquitos, etc). What I received was 5 beef (or was it pork?) items. As the hungry two of us sat down to feast at the park (the kids had McD's miles before that so it was just us two), we realized the lack of chicken-esque meat in any of our mexi-treats. "Maybe it's just all dark meat" we supposed, trying to believe they really hadn't gotten our order 80% incorrect! Nope, that's definitely darker than any chicken I've seen. So I went back and got more food for free, brought it back to the park and we finally ate -- effectively doubling my personal quota of beef (or pork?) for the week! Ang was just happy to eat real poultry after the mix-up!
